The Pinto Horse Association of American differs from the American Paint Horse Association in the fact that they recognize different types of horses, ponies and miniatures in their registry.

Size classifications:

Miniature: any equine measuring 34 inches or less
Miniature B: any equine measuring between 34 and 38 inches
Pony: any equine measuring between 38 inches and 56 inches (14 hands)
Horse: any equine measuring more than 56 inches (14 hands)

In addition, Pinto classifies each equine into one of four types:
Hunter, Pleasure, Saddle and Stock, and three color patterns: Tobiano, Overo and Breeding Stock.

How much white is enough?
To be accepted into the regular registry, the Pinto must have:
Miniatures: two square inches of cumulative white in the qualifying zone
Ponies: three square inches of cumulative white in the qualifying zone
Horses: four square inches of cumulative white in the qualifying zone

All white must have underlying pink skin to be eligible.
